 | The Beauty and Longevity of Stainless Steel Caskets
Stainless steel is a generic term that refers to a number of different steels. These steels share one characteristic-they are composed of an alloy of carbon steel containing 10% or more chromium.
Nickel and other chemical elements are also used in the formulation of various types of stainless steel.
Manufacturers choose from among the different types of stainless alloy based on the combination of ingredients that make it best suited for the final product.
For example, 409 (Ferritic) stainless steel alloy is often used for casket manufacturing because of its resistance to atmospheric oxidation and high durability in outdoor use.
Aurora uses type 409 on the advice of its supplier, Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation-one of the nation's largest steel manufacturers.
Longevity
Although there is no conclusive data on the life of stainless steel in specific burial conditions, the results of an independent laboratory test are quite revealing.
In a 95-degree Fahrenheit saltwater solution, stainless steel (type 409) was found to be approximately 8.3 times longer lasting than 16-gauge carbon steel. In the same test, stainless steel was 67% as long lasting as copper.
History
The first true stainless steel was melted on Aug. 13, 1913 by English inventor Harry Brearley, who was conducting research to find a more wear-resistant steel.
In order to examine the grain structure of the new steel, he etched samples with nitric acid and discovered that this new steel strongly resisted chemical attack.
Everyday Uses
Today, stainless steel is the material of choice for many applications because of its resistance to corrosion as well as its aesthetic qualities, which enable it to be polished to a satin or mirror finish.
The most everyday use of stainless steel is cutlery. Other uses include food production and storage; pumping and containment of oils, gasses and acids; modern architecture; medical implants and equipment; and cars.
