How Positive Choices Works to Save Lives
The purpose of the Positive Choices program is to get teens and their parents to sign the Positive Promise at the Positive Choices website, www.positive-choices.org.
Funeral directors who participate in the Positive Choices program will receive the Promotion Kit from Aurora, then should contact local high schools to introduce the program. Ideally, the funeral director meets with a school administrator (principal, SADD coordinator) and a student leader (class president, student government). The funeral director will ask the school for three things:
- Hang the Positive Choices posters in the halls or classrooms.
- Distribute the Positive Choices Parent Fact Sheets to parents, hopefully with a letter from the funeral director describing the program.
- Have the student leader introduce the program to entire student body. This could be done over the Public Address System, with a letter distributed in homeroom or even at a school assembly.
If these things happen, the program should be well on its way in that school. The funeral director may dedicate more time or energy to the program by sponsoring a local scholarship for that school, participating in a school assembly to introduce the program or reinforcing the Positive Choices message before prom, spring break, summer vacation, etc.
Sponsoring a local scholarship is an excellent way to encourage students to participate in the program. Aurora can help funeral directors administer the scholarship by randomly selecting a student at that school who has signed the Positive Promise. Additionally, Aurora will provide monthly reports to funeral homes with the number of students and parents who sign the Positive Promise.
Funeral directors could also promote this program with church youth groups, community groups like the YMCA, or summer camps.
